Horst M. Glaser, 82, of Columbus, died at 3:55 p.m. Monday, July 3, 2017, at his home.

He completed an apprenticeship to be a toolmaker in Berlin, Germany, passing all his exams and becoming a toolmaker in 1951. He obtained his engineering degree in 1953 from the Technical University in Berlin, Germany.

Horst immigrated from Germany to Canada in 1954, where he initially held farming jobs to fulfill the terms of his immigration contract before finding employment as a toolmaker. He first found employment as an engineer in the United States in the early 1960s at American Cyanamid before moving to Phoenix, Arizona, to take a job in the General Electric Computer Department. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to venture out and establish machine shops with business partners in Indiana in the early 1970s and ultimately form Columbus Precision Products which was in business for nearly 10 years until 1981. Horst then joined Arvin Industries as an engineer in tooling before joining the Arvin TD Center as Product Manager in 1987 where he remained until his retirement in 1998.

He was a member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, Columbus Kiwanis Club and Hope First Baptist Church.

Horst was an avid golfer and treasured the years he was a member and played at Otter Creek Golf Course. Horst was particularly proud of his efforts to establish the Hauser High School golf team in the early 1980s and coached the team for one year. He had three holes in one in his lifetime - first: Salt Creek Golf Club; second and third: Otter Creek.

Born on July 19, 1934, in Berlin, Germany, Horst was the son of Karl and Anna Bahndt Glaser. He married Judy Newton on Sept. 6, 1964, and she preceded him in death on May 2, 1994.

Survivors include children, Karla (Andy) Childers of Warren, N.J. and Chris Glaser of Mooresville; granddaughter, Elaina Johnson-Glaser of Carmel; two nieces; and several cousins.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife; three half-brothers; and a half-sister.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Friday at Norman Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until time of service Friday. Cremated remains will be buried next to his wife at Hope Moravian Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be given to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana, https://ourhospice.org/.
