3/13/2017 2:36:00 PM Officers interrupt burglary attempt at Dollar General
Hope Police Department
The Bartholomew County Sheriffs Department responded to a burglary alarm call at the Dollar General in Hope, Sunday, March 12th.
Surveillance video showed that two subjects forced entry into the emergency exit and tied a rope to the Dollar General's safe. They then attempted to pull the safe out of the building with a vehicle. During this, the rope broke and the thieves were unsuccessful and left the store empty-handed.
Due to the ease with which the thieves gained entry, a Hope Police reserve officer covered overnight in case the thieves tried again.
At approximately 3:07 a.m., Monday, Officer Skyler Hollin observed a silver pickup truck pull into the Dollar General and back up to the emergency exit door. Three males exited the vehicle wearing face masks and once again entered the Dollar General.
They attempted to tie a rope and chain to the safe but were cut short by Officer Hollin. The suspects evaded capture by driving through the grass as Officer Hollin blocked the exit of the Dollar General. A short pursuit followed west on County Road 600N and onto County Road 500/525E.
Two subjects bailed out of the vehicle on 525 East and ran west into a farmer's field as the vehicle continued north on 525E. Officer Hollin gave a short foot chase but lost sight of the suspects.
Bartholomew County and Columbus Police Department K-9's came out and tracked but lost the track after tracking for over an hour.
The tow rope and chain were recovered for evidence from the dollar store, a two-wheel dolly was also recovered. At this time the investigation is on-going.
