A Hope man was trapped in his upside-down vehicle for several hours Tuesday morning after crashing off of a bridge on County Road 450N over Haw Creek.
Bartholomew County deputies received a report of an inverted vehicle possibly submerged in the creek at 9:46 a.m. Tuesday. They found Tony Whittington, 21, trapped inside the wreckage. After being rescued by firefighters and the Bartholomew County Water Rescue and Recovery team, he was flown by Lifeline helicopter to an Indianapolis area hospital.
His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
The cause of the accident is unknown but deputies believe he may have been trapped for four hours or more before the wreck was discovered.
The road was closed for several hours to repair minor damage to the bridge.
Judy Jackson, spokeswoman for the sheriff's department, says that drug-related items were allegedly found in the vehicle. That information has been forwarded to the Bartholomew County Prosecutor's office.
Deputies involved in the rescue included: Capt. Dave Steinkoenig, Capt. Christopher Roberts, Detective Chad Swank, Deputy Kevin Abner and Deputy Andrew Dougan. Assisting the sheriff's department were Columbus Regional Hospital amublance, Columbus Fire Department, Clifford Volunteer Fire Department, and the Bartholomew County Highway Department.
