Tuesday will be Debbie Hatton Day in Hope, in recognition of an award recently presented to the Hope Utilities clerk.
Town officials say that Hatton was chosen as the Indiana Rural Water Association's 2017 Bonna Burns Bookkeeper of the Year Award winner at this year's association annual conference.
In a letter nominating Hatton, Town Manager J.T. Doane, Hope Utilities Manager David Clouse and Clerk-Treasurer Diane Burton praised Hatton for her "invaluable and impeccable service."
"Hatton is extremely professional, articulate and thorough in her engagement and communication with the public at the Utilities Office. She maintains a sincere and genuine approach in handling any and all matters. There is a high level of confidence that job duties are handled in a timely, thorough and efficient manner."
Town officials outlined an incident where Hatton's diligence helped save a customer money both on their utility bill and on possibly expensive repairs.
"Hatton was reviewing customer usage reports and determined an abnormality in billing for a local church; she notified that church immediately and it was determined they indeed had a leak. The church rectified the leak."
Hatton's actions also led to an amendment to town ordinances, setting up a policy to handle irregular billing based on leaks.
Hatton was also recognized last year for her 20 years of service to the community.
