Unlike last Saturday night when donkeys got a lot of laughs, the atmosphere surrounding the Southwestern Shelby Class A sectional will more closely resemble Hoosier Hysteria.
All is serious this time of year in Indiana.
Eight seniors - Mason Sherman, AJ Titus, Justin Compton, Alex Gross, Sam Meek, Caleb Orlich, Joe Sweet and Matt Sweet - will lead the Jets into the tournament and hopefully into a successful defense of its title.
Considering strength of schedule, the Jets (16-6) are a slight favorite to win Hauser's seventh sectional in school history. Morristown (22-3) has won nine sectionals. Hauser finished one game ahead of the Yellow Jackets and recently finished atop the Mid-Hoosier Conference.
If all goes according to the predictors, the two Mid-Hoosier rivals will meet in Friday's 7:30 PM second game. Both are favored to advance to the semi-final round by defeating Waldron (3-18) and Rising Sun (12-10), respectively, in Wednesday's second-round games. Oldenburg Academy (15-7) will face the winner of game 1 at 7:30 p.m.
Hauser played big schools Jennings County, New Palestine, Columbus North, East Central, Franklin, Indian Creek, Greensburg and Lawrenceburg during the regular season. A blowout loss to New Pal - when both Sherman and Meek were out of the lineup - was the only game in which the Jets failed to closely compete. Morristown's schedule paled in comparison.
Slowing down Morristown's Hayden Langkabel will be the defensive challenge for the Jets. Langkabel is averaging 26.4 ppg and is headed to Marian University on a basketball scholarship.
Play at Southwestern begins tonight when the host Spartans (11-12) square off with Jac-Cen-Del (9-14).
