Normal Friday trash service for Hope will be held on Saturday this week due to Wednesday bad weather.

Chris Ross with CGS Services of Morristown says that the company decided at about 6 a.m. Wednesday to delay pickups for all of their customers by one day for the rest of the week, due to the slick road conditions. He said the decision was made for the safety of their employees.

A similar situation developed earlier this month, when CGS canceled trash pickups for the week due to an ice and sleet storm that hit the area.

At last week's Town Council meeting, Ross apologized for those problems.

"I want to apologize to everyone about this past Friday with the ice and the situation we had," he said.

He said that the decision was made then between 5:30 and 6 a.m.

"It was primarily (employee) safety, not only to get them to work and to do the job, but to get them back home," Ross said.

He said that there were about 5,000 customers that were not picked up on that day. A phone blast message went out to many customers, but in Hope, he said that because the company does not have direct contact information for customers here, they were not able to be notified directly.

"If it is any consolation, in the 35 years that I have been doing this, I have about half a dozen times I can think of, that for trash companies that I have worked for, that we haven't picked up," Ross said. "I realize that doesn't relieve the situation."

He said of the customers he had talked to, most had been very understanding of the situation.

Ross said that the lesson learned from that incident was to keep the public better informed. He said that the company would reach out to town officials and the media directly by email to let them know of a developing situation that would lead to delays.

"Nine times out 10, the biggest problem you have with this is letting people know, what is going on, why and when it will be addressed," Ross said.
