Robert Arthur May, 91, of Hope, died at 5:00 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2018 at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.

Bob was born on January 11, 1927 in Indianapolis, Indiana. His parents were Robert Sidener May and Marguerite Doyle May. He lived in Indianapolis until 1932 when he moved to the Hope community.

He was a graduate of Hope High School in 1945 and felt fortunate to serve as class president all four years. After declining scholarship offers to Purdue and Franklin College, he decided to work for Robert A. Grindle and Company as a public accountant. In June of 1946, he was transferred to Bedford, Indiana and operated offices in Bedford and Paoli for the firm.

Bob married Peggy Lee Duesenberg on September 22, 1946, and she worked with him until the 1980’s. She preceded him in death in 2001. They were the parents of daughters Pamela and Patricia, who survive.

In 1949, he opened his own practice with Robert DelVecchio in Columbus and they had clients throughout southern Indiana. In June of 1965, with Peggy’s help, he opened his own office in Columbus, which he sold to Stephen C. Haworth in December 1986. He continued working until Spring 2018.

Bob served as Worshipful Master of the Hope Masonic Lodge #150 FAM in 1953, the year the lodge was 100 years old; this was one of his greatest honors. He was also a 60 year member of the Scottish Rite. In addition to being treasurer of FOCUS of Hope (now Hope Community Center), he was on the board of the Yellow Trail Museum, treasurer of the Flatrock Hawcreek School Building Corporation, and a board member of the Hawcreek Flatrock Area Endowment when established in 2002. He was also a member of the Columbus Elks Lodge #521, where he was Elk of the Year in 2004.

In 2014, Bob was named Outstanding Alumna of the Flatrock Hawcreek schools and served as Grand Marshall of the Heritage Day Parade.

In his free time he was an avid card player, followed the stock market, and enjoyed going to the horse races and attending Hauser High School athletic events.

A service will be held at Norman Funeral Home on Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 1 p.m. with visitation from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A Masonic service will follow. At the service friends will be encourage to share remembrances. Entombment at Garland Brook Mausoleum will take place at 4 p.m.

Hope was always very good to him and his family and he thought there was no better place to live.
