Authorities warn of tainted candy

By Bartholomew County Sheriff's Department-

Bartholomew County deputies are warning of a drug-tainted candy that looks like Sweet Tarts that are circulating in the community and were found on a high school student.

The candy is laced with the anti-depressant Xanax and they are known as "Xanie Tarts."

Last year, an Indiana University student was charged with selling Xanax-laced gummy candy out of his off-campus apartment. The sheriff's department reports that the drug-laced candy has only recently appeared in Bartholomew County and were discovered on a 17-year-old student.

"Apparently, the candy's appearance is not changed by this process," said Sheriff Matt Myers. "We are very concerned that someone might overdose if they eat the candy unaware that it has been laced with drugs."

Xanax is used to treat anxiety disorders. Side effects include:

  • Drowsiness and feeling tired;

  • Slurred speech, lack of balance or coordination;

  • Memory problems

  • Feeling anxious
