Coach steps down after 20+ years at Hauser

Bob Nobbe has stepped down after 20 years as the boys' varsity basketball coach at Hauser Jr./Sr. High School.

The Flat Rock-Hawcreek School Corp. Board accepted Nobbe's resignation during a public meeting in which it also elected board officers for the 2017 calendar year. Steve Wilson was elected president, Patrick Walters was elected vice president and John Harker was elected secretary.

But it was Nobbe's resignation that generated the most discussion.

"Mr. Nobbe wanted to express his sincere gratitude for the opportunity to coach at Hauser," Superintendent Shawn Price said in a prepared statement. "The support of colleagues, school administration, parents and the community over the past 20 years has been first rate.... He feels especially privileged to have been able to work with many great kids and build a multitude of long lasting friendships.

"He wishes the basketball program continued success and says he will always be a Jets fan."

Harker said he remembers when the school corporation hired Nobbe in 1996 as a dual basketball coach and social studies teacher. He said Nobbe pledged at that time to be a teacher first and a coach second. And the coach proved to be just that, earning a reputation as an "excellent" teacher who won the respect of the generations of students who continue to come through his classroom.

Nobbe will continue teaching social studies, Price said.

The board chose Assistant Coach Griff Roth as interim head coach for the remainder of the 2016-2017 season. It approved Spencer Gross, Adam Miller and Shawn Thayer to assist him as volunteers.

Price said an in-depth search for Nobbe's permanent replacement will begin when the season is done.[[In-content Ad]]
