Columbus Regional offers American Heart Month events
Columbus Regional Health and WellConnect hope to celebrate and educate people of all ages with a variety of activities during the month of February, which is also American Heart Month.
According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is still the number one killer of men and women in the United States. Throughout the month, a variety of health experts from nurses to pharmacists to cardiologists from Columbus Regional Health will offer activities and educational sessions related to heart health, heart disease risks and what one can do to keep his or her ticker going strong. The activities scheduled include:
Weekly question-and-answer information sessions with Columbus Regional Health pharmacists and nurses. Come in and chat with an expert, whether your question is about medications, salt in-take or heart disease risk factors, representatives will be available to talk one-on-one.
Pharmacists will be available from 12 to 1 p.m. Feb. 3 and Feb. 17 and from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Feb. 10 and Feb. 24. Nurses will be available from 12 to 1 p.m. and 5:30 to 6:30 every Monday and Wednesday throughout the month.
WellConnect will also be hosting two heart-related Lunch 'n Learns with Columbus Regional Health physicians. From noon to 1 p.m. Feb. 5, cardiologist Nandu Gourineni, M.D. will present "Keeping Your Heart Healthy," a discussion on hypertension and the impact of sodium in the diet. From noon to 1 p.m. Feb 26, cardiothoracic surgeon Sorin Pusca, M.D., will present "Heart Surgery in Younger Adults," a look at coronary bypass in those younger than the average age of most heart surgery patients. Lunch is provided and registration is required for both sessions.
There will also be various activities and informational displays throughout the month related to children's diets can affect their heart health later in life, how one can control certain risk factors for heart disease and just how much sodium is in our diets today.
