Press release

Did you know:

  • There are many reasons why someone might rejection another person. Most commonly it's because the 'target' doesn't fit in with a group in some way.

  • Most people can sense they are being rejected in under three minutes.

  • Even when someone is rejected by strangers, it still hurts.

  • The same area of the brain that is active during physical pain is also active when someone experiences rejection. In other words, it hurts!

Please mark your calendar and plan to attend the series of community forums called "All In: Building a Positive Community", Aug. 11, 18, and 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Southside Elementary School auditorium. The topic of the forums:

  • August 11, 2015: Developing Awareness about Social Rejection. Dr. Kip Williams, Purdue Professor of Psychological Sciences, will discuss his research about inclusion/exclusion ostracism, and social rejection

  • August 18, 2015: Learning More about Social Rejection. Featuring the highly acclaimed documentary film Reject (for adults 19 and over)

  • August 25, 2015: Taking Action: Discover how you can help to build and encourage more inclusive relationships, both individually and within Bartholomew County

This is a great opportunity to help our community be more aware of the what rejection is, its affects, and what can be done to address the issue.

Childcare will be available for potty-trained children ages 3 - 3rd grade; pre-registration required for childcare by the Friday before each event by calling the Purdue Extension Office at 812-379-1665.

More Information or Questions? Contact: Harriet Armstrong at 812-379-1665, [email protected] or Elisabeth Smith at 812-379-1665, [email protected]

Certificates will be distributed after each session to those needing continuing education credit (i.e. teachers, day care workers, foster parents, social service agency personnel).[[In-content Ad]]
