Duck Ponderings: On the Boardwalk
Sitting on a beach chair in a corner
Alcohol close by, talking to each passerby
Smoking one cigarette after the other
Guitar in his arms, pick in his fingers
Said, let me play a song for you sir
It's one I wrote some time ago
After coming out of a long coma
Had quite a car in the eighties
Took it out when drugged up
Wrapped it around a tree
I said, must be a reason you're still here
Why you were given a second chance
He said, yeah and others too
I've thought about it many times
Can't understand why God keeps me here
My wife up and left me
Still know the birthdays of my children
Thinking about each today
Even in this state, here are the dates
Wish I could get straightened out
Asked if he knew the Serenity Prayer
Said most of the words with me
Then asked if I would repeat them
As he put his old guitar to the words
Shaking his head as if each spoke to him
God, grant me serenity to accept the things I can't change
Courage to change the things I can
And the wisdom to know the difference
As I turned to walk away
Michael said, sir thank you for respecting me
I said, thank you for sharing your story[[In-content Ad]]
