Duck Ponderings: Praise for young people

Many people attended "The Cowboy & The Jean Skirt" Dinner Theatre at WILLow LeaVes, and I am quite appreciative. It does not matter how good of a manuscript you have for a play unless you can find quality actors to bring it to life. Pete Law did a great job selecting the right people. I could go on forever with praises for each; however, I want to focus on the youngest members: Collin Banks, Jared Schoen, and Avery Tallent.

Collin came on late and added greatly to the overall mood by helping with lights and sound. Besides working full time, Collin is in a band. He could have easily told us no when being asked to be our tech guy. There are so many other things a young single man could be doing with his time, but he was there every practice while we were fine tuning the production. Then, he was there for three consecutive performances over the weekend on cue with the lights during transition times and the sound during the scenes. When we were tearing down the stage, he was right there until the very end and even helped move a borrowed kitchen set back to Columbus.

Jared and Avery are both seniors. They are students and athletes. Jared plays soccer; Avery plays tennis. Both would come to play practice after participating in their respective sport, stay several hours, and then go home to do schoolwork hoping to be in bed by midnight. The actual play would not have been nearly as effective without their acting abilities and without their performance of an original song, The Rodeo Room. There were many smiles within the audience when they played their instruments and uplifted their voices receiving a warm applause afterward.

Now, I am going off on a "rabbit trail" as Rena Dillman, author of "The Cowboy & The Jean Skirt" would state.

I reflected a little on the above points while watching the Hauser Varsity Volleyball Team win yet another match against Brown County to stay undefeated. Due to knowing something about the sport and the program, I am well aware of the time and the effort required. If you have not had the opportunity to watch them, then I would highly recommend you find a way. There are not many volleyball teams undefeated at this point.

Like the three young men above, these young ladies must learn valuable time management skills which stay with them the rest of their lives. A good friend of mine, Ken Seim, often talks about the importance of commitment. All of these young people, and many others, continually demonstrate commitment!

We are so fortunate to have our local schools within our community and young people in our lives. Indeed, we are![[In-content Ad]]
