Duck Ponderings: Supporting the girls' softball dreams

My softball days, unknown to me, actually started in Little League Baseball where I received my first trophy. It was not easy for my parents to find a way for me to play in North Vernon since we were about 20 minutes away, but they made it a priority. I then went on to play a lot of softball and fondly recall moving up from the open field of Tea Creek to North Vernon with an actual fence. There were a few years I played in four leagues with a tourney about every weekend. While watching the girls win the Hauser Sectional and the Rising Sun Regional, all kinds of wonderful memories resurfaced.

Afterward, I had to watch one of my favorite movies, "Field of Dreams," as a part of my celebration. Then, there were even more memories, one that brought tears thinking about playing pitch and catch with my dad. I jotted down some of my favorite lines from this moving movie:

"If you build it, he will come."

"Smell of the ballpark out at my nose."

"Cool of the grass at my feet."

"I love this game. ... the sounds, the smells."

"Ball, glove to your face."

"I would play it for nothing."

"We don't recognize the significant moments."

"To squint at the sky so blue."

"To feel the tingling in your arms as you connect with the ball."

"Flop head first and wrap your arms around the base."

"People will come from all over."

"Memories will be so thick that they'll have to brush them away from their faces."

"The one constant through all the years has been baseball."

Twenty-five years ago, this community got behind building a sporting complex proudly referred to by all as HSP. In the meantime, numerous young people have had the opportunity to develop their softball and baseball skills with the help of many adults volunteering their coaching abilities. Many have participated on travel teams trying to hone their skills even more. Consequently, there have been great moments coming from Hauser in softball and baseball.

One memorable clip in "Field of Dreams" would have to be the line of cars approaching the ball field surrounded by cornfields. That's the picture that comes to my mind as I visualize our fans traveling to the North Daviees semistate to watch the girls in action at approximately 1 p.m. this Saturday. It is hard to predict what will happen, but I know whatever does happen will add to the long story book of Hauser sporting accomplishments. And, there will be lots and lots of memories![[In-content Ad]]
