Duck Ponderings: The Jet Jumble or The Jet Scramble or ...
While watching the game, I was thinking about the importance of a system whether it be in the classroom or on the ball field. It is one of the reasons why I survived 36 years in the classroom and one of the reasons why the Lady Jets continue to win. I thought a lot about the small-ball strategy where the key is to take advantage of great pitching and find a way to get a run across the plate, even if there is not a base hit.
Every player on the Hauser team is fundamentally sound which speaks volumes for our program and coaching staff. They know how to catch, throw, hit, bunt, steal, slide, and back one another up. In addition, they take the field understanding the importance of humbleness, hustle, intensity, momentum, team spirit, listening to the coaches, and acknowledging their fans.
Rising Sun knew what we would be doing, knew to expect bunting and stealing. In fact, all in attendance knew it too. We still did it, about as well as you could possibly expect. To me, that's what made the game even more amazing! I think you would be hard pressed to find another team that you would have confidence in every player being able to bunt if called upon. It just changes the game; it puts so much pressure on the defense!
On Tuesday, I plan on taking a shorter drive, this time to Edinburgh. I suspect the Hauser Nation will be well represented, a term I believe Sam Simmermaker first stated, well known local sports broadcaster. Will the system change? I doubt it! Why should it? It has been quite successful!
In the meantime, I am trying to come up with a term to put with Jet(s) to describe our style of play. As of now, I am between calling it the Jet Jumble or The Jet Scramble. Possibly, I should call Sam!
