Federal charges filed in county narcotics case

On July 27, 2017, approx. 7:19 a.m., the Joint Narcotics Enforcement Team (JNET) and the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) executed a search warrant at 2229 Fremont Drive, Columbus, IN. This was the result of a multi-agency investigation which began in mid-2017.

During the execution of the search warrant, the following items were located:

  • Approximately one pound of crystal methamphetamine;

  • A small amount of cocaine;

  • A small amount of marijuana;

  • More than $22,000 in cash;

  • Multiple firearms; and

  • Ammunition

    Jose L. Colis-Cerda, 39, was arrested and taken to the Bartholomew County Jail on preliminary charges of:

  • Dealing in methamphetamine;

  • Possession of cocaine or narcotic drug;

  • Possession of marijuana;

  • Maintaining a common nuisance;

  • Court order.

    On Aug. 1, 2017, a federal arrest warrant was issued through the United States Southern District of Indiana for Colis-Cerda. On August 3, 2017, Colis-Cerda appeared in the U.S. Southern District of Indiana for and was charged with:

  • 4 counts of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.

    Colis-Cerda was then remanded into the custody of the United States Marshals Service.

    Columbus Police Chief Rohde said, "The Columbus Police Department and JNET continues to aggressively pursue suspects who sell illegal drugs in our community."  "This arrest demonstrates the importance of cooperation between our local and federal law enforcement agencies."

    "Maintaining the safety of our communities in the Southern District of Indiana remains a top priority of this office," said United States Attorney Josh Minkler. "When individuals choose to deal dangerous narcotics in our neighborhoods, they can expect the hammer of federal prosecution."

    The Joint Narcotics Enforcement Team, a combined unit of the Bartholomew County Sheriff's Office, the Columbus Police Department and the Bartholomew County Prosecutor's Office, is proactively targeting the manufacturing and abuse of dangerous drugs in Columbus and Bartholomew County. All suspects should be considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.[[In-content Ad]]
