Greenlee honored as 2016 Hauser salutatorian
It would be on her own terms.
During her freshman year, she told her parents they shouldn't expect her to follow in her older siblings' footsteps. After all, brother Morgan had set the bar high as salutatorian of the Class of 2011. Two years later, sister Mikala carved out her own niche as valedictorian.
But a change came over the third-born child during her sophomore year. She decided that if she had to sit in a classroom for seven hours a day, she might as well make the most of it and do as well as she could.
So she studied. And she worked.
And now she's Hauser's salutatorian for the Class of 2016.
The graduation ceremony was Friday night in the high school gymnasium and included 56 graduating seniors, including valedictorian Abbey Ashbrook.
As the students with the highest GPA's, Ashbrook (#1) and Greenlee (#2) gave speeches.
"It's a big deal," Greenlee said in a phone interview. "But I'm ready to graduate."
Greenlee said she's always done things her own way, no matter what the endeavor. For example, her decision to work hard during the school day found motivation in the fact that she didn't want to take work home with her. Her idea was that time spent away from school should be time spent with friends and family -- even though the no-work-after-hours goal didn't always work out as planned.
She's in no hurry to commit to much beyond high school either. She knows she will attend IUPUC, but she doesn't know what she'll choose as he major. It might have something to do with animals, the outdoors or children, which are some of her interests.
Maybe she'll discover a different passion.
Regardless, Greenlee will do it on her own terms.
"She's a hard worker, and very determined," said Greenlee's mother, Lana. "If you tell her she can't do something, she says 'Just watch me'."[[In-content Ad]]
