Hauser players, coaches square off to fight cancer
By From Bob Nobbe-
Working to benefit a program known as "Coaches vs Cancer," the Jets set out to raise money and donate to our local cancer-fighting agency. The team put together three activities to help raise funds.
On Friday, Jan. 31st, the Jets gathered in the school field house for a Pie In The Face contest. Willing administrators, teachers and boys and girls basketball players donated their mugs to get a pie in the face for this great cause. Students bid donations to see who would have to take a pie.
The bidding was fast and furious with the eventual highest bidder rewarded with the opportunity to deliver the pie themselves. This year's Pie in the Face "winners" were dean of students J.P. Mayer, English teacher Rebekah Bryan, teacher and basketball coach Bob Nobbe and varsity team members Jordan McDaniel and Rory Thayer. While these volunteers enjoyed their pie, the rest of the student body had a great time watching them get it and raising money for the cause.
Activities continued into Friday night as the varsity boy's game against Batesville was billed as a Coaches vs Cancer game. To call attention to the cause, coaches donned sneakers to wear with their dress clothes and players incorporated pink shoelaces into their high tops. Several announcements in regard to the fight against cancer were made during the course of the game. At its conclusion, cheerleaders made their way through the Hauser and Batesville crowds to collect donations.
As a final fundraising event, the boys basketball team delivered Subway lunches to all participating school teachers and staff on the following Tuesday. Participants were able to order lunch and have it delivered to their desk by a basketball player. With great support and cooperation from Subway/Estep and Co., the Jets delivered a large number of lunches with all proceeds and donations going to help find a cure for cancer.
All told, the Hauser Jets were able to make a sizeable donation of $1,100 to help individuals and our community with this fight. Thanks to all who supported the team for this worthwhile cause.
