Hope Elementary offering free meals in June

Every child can eat lunch for free almost as often as he wants next month at Hope Elementary School -- and into August elsewhere in Bartholomew County.

It's just that simple.

Bonnie Burbrink, the Flat Rock-Hawcreek School Corp.'s director of Food Service, said the Hope school will operate as a free-meal site through most of June for the 2017 Summer Feeding Program, a federal government program that fully reimburses participating locations. As such, food will be provided and prepared by cafeteria workers at Columbus North High School, then shipped to sites across Bartholomew County to be served Mondays through Fridays to any child who shows up.

Locations are:

  • Hope Elementary School (June 5 to June 30) -- Lunch 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

  • Schmitt Elementary School (June 1 to Aug. 1) -- Breakfast 8 to 8:30 a.m.; Lunch 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

  • Foundation for Youth (June 5 to July 28) -- Breakfast 7:30 to 8 a.m.; Lunch 11 a.m. to noon.

  • Ninth Street Park (June 5 to July 20) -- Lunch 1:30 p.m.

  • Pence Street Park (June 5 to July 20) -- Lunch 1:45 p.m.

  • Morningside Park (June 5 to July 20) -- Lunch 2 p.m.

  • Taylorsville Elementary School playground (June 19 to July 21) -- Lunch 1 to 1:30 p.m.

Meals also will be offered at various field trip locations, including Donner Park and Skateland, according to the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. Interested parties should call 812-376-4462 for an updated schedule, or visit the BCSC homepage at bcsc.k12.in.us.

Adults can eat, too, but at a charge of $1.85 for breakfast and $3.30 for lunch.

No food will be served at any site during the July 4 holiday.

Burbrink, who credits BCSC with making the service possible in Bartholomew County, said Hope Elementary School qualified for the federal program because at least 50 percent of its students were receiving free and reduced meals as of February. She said the Flat Rock-Hawcreek School Corp. served between 50 and 75 meals a day during previous participation years. She said there is no reason to think participation this year will be any less -- and might even exceed that level.

"It's a good program that helps a lot of people," she said.[[In-content Ad]]
