Hope seeking to refund money from outstanding checks
Or, more accurately, can't get people to take back their own money the town is trying to give back to them.
Hope Clerk-Treasure Diane Burton has prepared a list of old, outstanding checks that are still on the town's books that have not yet been cashed. Most are from refunds of water and sewer deposits, and are from amounts ranging from 15 cents to $585, Burton said recently.
Burton said that after two years, the town is allowed to roll the money from outstanding checks back into the fund from which they were issued. The checks can still be claimed up to seven years after being issued, she said.
The oldest checks on the current list are from 2009.
She told the Town Council last month that there were $606 still outstanding in water checks and $1,191 in sewer checks. The council approved rolling the money back to the accounts.
