The Hope Summer Playground sports program will celebrate its 25th anniversary at its current location with an opening ceremony at its first season games on Saturday.

The program kicked off at the Flat Rock-Hawcreek school ball fields in 1991, said Patrick Walters, an organizer for the program.

"I am 42 years old and I played in it as a kid," Walters said.

Walters said Hope Summer Playground is a collaborative effort with Flat Rock-Hawcreek schools.

The program includes T-ball for children up to 6 years old, softball for girls under 8 and under 12 and baseball for boys including rookie (coach-pitch), minor and major leagues and the boy's Babe Ruth team.

The program runs from April through July 1st and normally draws about 300 children. The cost is $25 a child or a maximum of $50 per family. The program operates Mondays through Saturdays.

The first games of the season are Saturday, May 2nd and the program will hold an opening ceremony, Walters said.

Walters said that the group is inviting any past board members, Flat Rock-Hawcreek school board members, coaches and volunteers to attend the event, starting at 10 a.m. Saturday. Former Hope Summer Playground board members will throw out the first pitch and there will be other festivities, he said.

"We'd like to see people out there," Walters said.[[In-content Ad]]
