Kayakers rescued from Flat Rock River

Three kayakers were rescued Sunday by the Bartholomew County Water Rescue Recovery Team after getting stranded in the Flat Rock River.

Judy Jackson, spokeswoman for the Bartholomew County Sheriff's Department, said the rescue team was called to the river near County Road 400N at 4:48 p.m. Sunday after the kayakers became stranded on a log jam.

The rescue team deployed an airboat and four team members from Owens Bend Park and found the three kayakers at about 5:18 p.m.

Larry Adams said that his kayak struck a log and capsized and when his sons, Craig and Grant, tried to assist him, the also became stranded. The rescue team returned the three to Owens Bend Park at about 5:25 p.m.

Jackson said Sheriff Matt Myers wants to remind everyone that the area's flooded rivers are dangerous and unpredictable.

Agencies assisting at the scene of the rescue were: the Bartholomew County Sheriff's Office, Columbus Police Department, Columbus Fire Department, the Clifford Volunteer Fire Department and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.[[In-content Ad]]
