Large-animal rescue workshop scheduled

Best practices for emergency responders dealing with large animals loose or stranded will be offered in a workshop from noon to 3:30 p.m. June 27th, at the Columbus Municipal Airport Terminal Building Conference Room.
A classroom presentation by Dr. Jodi Lovejoy from the State Board of Animal Health will be followed by hands-on demonstration with livestock at Columbus Animal Care Services on Arnold Street.
This awareness-level training is appropriate for firefighters, law enforcement, EMS, animal control and Humane Society personnel, veterinarians and veterinary technicians, private individuals with livestock interests, and large equipment owner/operators. Skills will include forming a response team, approaching and handling livestock in a safe manner, determining the safest method for rescue, and appropriate field euthanasia techniques, all within an Incident Command System setting.
The session will begin with a lunchtime presentation by Steve Cain, Purdue Extension Disaster Specialist, on the 2016 DuBois County outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI). Public health and emergency personnel can learn about response coordination and biosecurity when disease strikes a large population of livestock.
