Madeline Irene Barton, 88, Shelbyville

Madeline Irene Barton, 88, of Shelbyville, passed away Sunday, May 24th, 2015 at Our Hospice Inpatient Facility in Columbus.

She was born Nov. 22nd, 1926, in Seymour, the daughter of George and Bernice (Tuell) Mize. Madeline married Clyde Crafton on September 3, 1944, and he preceded her in death on September 20, 1949. On July 9th, 1950, she married her husband of 58 years, James Barton, and he preceded her in death on April 2nd, 2009.

Madeline is survived by her daughters, Marilyn Marie (Crafton) Swinford and husband, Max, of Flat Rock, Jennifer Basey and husband, Bill, of Shelbyville, Jerri Ritz and husband, Albert, of St. James City, Florida, and Julie Saunders and husband, Steve, of Greenwood; son, James Barton III and wife, Elaine, of Purvis, Mississippi; daughter-in-law, Judy Crafton of Groveland, Florida; brothers, Don Mize and wife, Marilyn, of Columbus and Howard Mize and wife, Clora Marie, of Hope; sisters-in-law, Betty Ann Mize of Missouri and Beverly Mize of Columbus; grandchildren, David Crafton, Charla Trimble, Chad Crafton, Keri Elam, David Swinford, Sandra Bostic, Pamela Lemmons, Matthew Barton, Brady Thompson, Amanda Thompson, Madisen Basey, Matthew Saunders and Joey Saunders; 24 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Thomas Lee Crafton; and brothers, Robert Mize and George Mize.

Madeline graduated from Hope High School in 1944.

She was a member of Geneva United Methodist Church, where she taught Bible school. She was also a 50-year member of Flat Rock Eastern Star and Noble Township Home Economics Club.

Madeline and her husband, James, enjoyed ballroom dancing. She also enjoyed cooking, canning, freezing, working in the garden and reading.

She knew the names of many birds and flowers and enjoyed searching for arrowheads while on walks in the woods.

Madeline loved spending time with family.

A Celebration of Madeline's Life will be from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, June 6th, 2015 at the Geneva United Methodist Church, 3107 E. Vandalia Rd., Flat Rock, IN 47234.

A memorial service will be at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the church, with Rev. Mark Dodd officiating.

Madeline and her husband, James will be interred at Norristown Cemetery in Shelby County.
