Old-fashioned fun set for Independence Day weekend
By From Barb Johnson-
That evening the event will begin with the annual Kids' Decorated bike/trike/stroller/wagon parade. Children should meet at the pump house on the north side of the square by 5:15 p.m., to register and line up for the parade. Information and entry forms are available at the Hope Branch of the Bartholomew County Public Library or at WiLLow LeaVes of Hope.
That evening, there will be free crafts, games, and contests like the annual watermelon eating contest or the seed-spitting contest or even the sack races for kids and adults throughout the evening. And if you are a great baker, try your hand in the apple pie baking contest that will have the usual monetary prizes for the top three pies.
In addition, there will be a cake walk hosted by Millers' Merry Manor, a program by Abe Lincoln, pony rides, and other activities to enjoy.
The Hartsville Fire Department will fry fish for the Yellow Trail Museum's fish fry and there will be other food booths available including Kappa Kappa Sigma's Fruit Crisps with homemade ice cream and lemonade shake-ups by the Moravian Youth.
And of course the Yellow Trail Museum will be open with ice cream floats for a $1 donation. The Hope Farmers' Market will also be taking place until about 8 p.m. that evening.
Beginning at about 7:30 p.m., the Bannister Family Band will entertain on the bandstand until Fireworks Time at dark.
This is an event that families can attend for free, or for a small cost with food and some of the activities that will be available. We would encourage everyone to bring chairs or a blanket for the fireworks. And bring a big smile as you join the community for this annual celebration.[[In-content Ad]]
