Roth chosen as permanent basketball coach

You can drop the "interim" from Griff Roth's coaching title.

During a public meeting Tuesday, Flat Rock-Hawcreek School Board members unanimously signed off on the seasoned Hauser veteran as its full-fledged varsity boys basketball coach, concluding a one-month search that attracted dozens of applicants.

Roth, a long-time assistant to Coach Bob Nobbe, had been interim coach since Nobbe stepped down in January.

"Griff has a heart for basketball, a heart for kids and a heart for Hauser," Principal J.P. Mayer said when asked what put Roth over the top.

Superintendent Shawn Price agreed.

"He knows these kids," he said.

Nobbe, who will continue to teach high school social studies, made his resignation official Jan. 10 after having missed the entire basketball season due to vision problems. In an interview with HSJ Online a few days later, the 51-year-old gave his shining endorsement to Griff as his replacement, saying head coaching responsibilities were the next logical step for a coaching veteran who knew Nobbe's philosophies about game play better than anyone else after 19 years of support.

The school district wanted applications anyway.

Mayer said a seven-member committee whittled down a pool of about 40 applicants to 14 semifinalists, out of which only four were selected for interviews. When those interviews were complete, it became obvious Griff was the right person all along.[[In-content Ad]]
