School board's canceled meeting causes few problems

A cancellation of Tuesday's biweekly school board meeting a mere eight hours before the gavel dropped has generated little more than a shrug of the shoulders from the superintendent of schools.

That's because the Flat Rock-Hawcreek School Board had no important business to conduct.

"March typically is a light month anyway," said Superintendent Shawn Price, who cancelled for a lack of a quorum. "We finished some important business last month with the approval of some projects that we need to schedule.

"We don't have anything left that's pressing."

The projects, made possible by interest-rate savings on refinanced debt, include a $247,000 paving job that will create new parking spaces north of the field house and add a rear drop-off at Hope Elementary School. Now that the board has approved the paving and awarded a contract to Flat Rock-based Robertson Paving Co., work should start in the spring or summer and finish in August.

Price said the board's next significant action would be the approval of personnel for next school year. But that's for a different day. In fact, he said he might cancel the March 28 board meeting as well, because it's so close to the April 4 meeting.

If that happens, a full six week will have passed between meetings.

"We'll decide something soon," he said.[[In-content Ad]]
