Flat Rock-Hawcreek teachers to see pay hikes

By By David Miller-

A new contract for teachers at Flat Rock-Hawcreek Schools, will mean pay hikes for newly hired teachers, as well as raising the maximum salary for teacher positions.

Attracting the best teachers and keeping them is a concern among every school district, and the Flat Rock-Hawcreek School Corp. is no exception. The new two-year agreement between the school district and the Flat Rock-Hawcreek Teachers’ Association intends to address that. The new agreement would increase the amount of money allocated to teacher salaries by 6.98% for the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years.

Starting salaries for a teacher with a bachelor’s degree go from $34,000 to $37,250. This often entails newer teachers who are full of ideas and energy, and constitute a lot of the district’s new teacher hires. The top end salary for teachers with a bachelor’s degree will increase from $42,400 to $49,250.

Those holding a master’s degree go from a starting salary of $39,600 to $42,850. Teachers with a master’s degree are typically more experienced and have furthered their education. They help to form the core of the faculty’s mentors and leadership. The top end salary for teachers with a master’s degree will increase from $64,800 to $68,050.

Teacher pay for extra duty has increased in addition to introducing a stipend for teachers who teach dual credit or AP courses. The school corporation is also increasing the amount that it contributes to health insurance costs, to help offset those costs for employees.

The school board approved the deal at its Oct. 29th meeting.
