Sheriff's Department seeks funds for new police dog

The Bartholomew County Sheriff's Department is raising funds for purchase of a new police dog.

Sgt. Kris Weisner and police dog Bolt retired last month, leaving the department with a single police dog.

Last week, the department received a $10,000 donation from Emmylou and John Wischmeier and a $4,000 donation from engine testing company Real World Testing.

“It is our goal to send a deputy to K9 school next month and to have two dogs back on our streets in May," said Bartholomew County Sheriff Matthew A. Myers. “Our ultimate goal is to have three K9 units."

Myers said there are many ways that police dogs assist enforcement, including:

  • K9s assist in locating and apprehending wanted suspects
  • Protect BCSO personnel
  • Search for criminals
  • Help search and rescue missing people
  • Track suspects
  • Locate evidence at crime scenes
  • Make vehicle inspections

Previously, Real World Testing donated $18,000 to purchase the department's second police dog, Diesel, and also chose his name.
