Press release
Columbus Police Department officers with the assistance of an off duty Bartholomew County deputy arrested a Flat Rock man on suspicion of driving while intoxicated after he was seen operating a motorcycle on 25th Street on Sunday evening.
Shortly after 8 p.m., CPD received a report of a possible impaired motorcyclist in the 9000 block of 25th Street. An off-duty Bartholomew County deputy observed the motorcycle near 25th Street and Taylor Road and with the assistance of a CPD officer stopped the operator who was identified as Robert G. Schonfeld, 64, of Flat Rock.
While speaking with Schonfeld, the officers noted that his speech was slurred and his eyes were bloodshot and glassy. Schonfeld was given a portable breath test and provided a breath sample of .125% Br.A.C. Schonfeld later advanced towards the officers and struck one them in the hand before being restrained. While searching Schonfeld’s clothing, the officers reportedly located a large bag of marijuana.
The officers applied for and later received a search warrant for a blood draw after Schonfeld refused to submit to a chemical intoxication test. Upon his discharge from the hospital, Schonfeld was transported to the Bartholomew County Jail on the following preliminary charges:
- Battery on a Public Safety Official (Level 6 Felony)
- Possession of Marijuana (Over 30 grams and with a Prior Conviction) Level 6 Felony
- Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated-Endangering (Class A Misdemeanor)
