Independence Day celebration looking for contest entrants
Everyone is invited to the Old Fashioned Independence Day Celebration that will take place on the town square on Friday, June 28 beginning at 5 p.m.
The evening kicks off with the annual Decorated Bike/Trike/Stroller/Wagon Parade for all children under age 12, at
5:20 p.m., at the pump house on the north side of the square.
At 5:30 p.m. Little Miss Sparkler and Mr. Firecracker will be crowned.
By 5:45 p.m. there will be a Cake Walk by Miller's Merry Manor in the shelter house, and Abe Lincoln will perform there about 6:45 p.m.
Don't miss the free crafts, games, and contests. Those will will include watermelon seed spitting and watermelon eating, tug-of-war, sack races and a water balloon toss that will run throughout the evening.
A fish fry will be provided by the Hartsville Fire Department. The Baptist Church will be providing items from their food booth. And Kappa Kappa Sigma will sell their delicious fruit crisps with homemade ice cream.
The Galbraith Family will offer homemade lemonade with all donations at that booth going to a special program at Riley Children's Hospital in memory of young Chase Galbraith.
We invite the local pie bakers to enter the Apple Pie Contest with registration at 5:45 p.m. and the judging to begin at 6 p.m. with winners in both the adult and children's contest receiving cash prizes.
Starting at about 7:15 p.m. the Banister Family Band will entertain on the bandstand. That will last until nearly fireworks time at about 10 p.m. And don't forget to bring lawn chairs or a blanket for seating for the fireworks display.
The Yellow Trail Museum will be open all evening with ice cream floats for $1, and you may find a few businesses open a bit later than usual that evening.
