Spring Fling will benefit American Cancer Society
A Saturday event will benefit the Hope Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society.
The Spring Fling Dinner will start at 6 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Hope.
While in previous years, the group has held a St. Valentine's themed dinner fundraiser, this year's event is going to celebrate the arrival of spring, says Jonna Shepherd one of the organizers.
"All the proceeds that we make, it goes to the American Cancer Society to help with research and then Hope gets credit for that," Shepherd said. "Each team that helps with the dinner, we divide (the proceeds) between the teams. but all of it goes to the American Cancer Society."
Saturday's dinner will feature a menu of fried chicken or boneless pork chops, cheesy potatoes, green beans, salad and rolls. The cost is $25 a couple or $15 each. For $5 more you can go to the dessert table, Shepherd said. Midnight Express Mobile Entertainment will be providing music.
Shepherd said that the town's Relay for Life is coming up on June 1st. There is still time to sign up a team to walk during the actual event, or there are volunteer opportunities to help out.
Shepherd said her interest in the Relay started when her husband Larry was in remission from breast cancer. That period coincided with the first Hope Relay for Life, she said.
"Larry's cancer went into remission and we just wanted to celebrate and shout it from the rooftops," she said. "We just thought the Relay would be a good way to bring awareness to men getting cancer. And so we have been relaying ever since."
Larry eventually succumbed to his cancer.
