Marie E. Engle Clouse, 94, of Hope

Marie E. Engle Clouse, 94, of Hope, died at 7:30 p.m. on October 13, 2019 at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana. She was born in Monroe, Indiana on October 18, 1924. She was the daughter of Leo Evan and Emelia Marie (Adler) Engle.

Marie graduated from Kirkland High School in Decatur, Indiana in April of 1942. She graduated from Ball State Teachers College with an A.B. Degree in 1946 and a M.A. Degree in 1961.

She taught Junior and Senior High School in Sweetser High School, Winchester High School, and Speedway High School, and retired from teaching at Eastwood Junior High in Washington Township, Indianapolis. She taught English, Latin, and Commerce.

Marie was married to Charles L. Clouse on July 30, 1961, at St. Luke Evangelical and Reformed Church in Speedway, Indiana. He preceded her in death on February 28, 1996.

She had been a member of St. Luke Evangelical and Reformed Church in Decatur, Indiana since childhood. Since 1961, Marie attended Hope Moravian Church in Hope, Indiana, and taught the Galilean Sunday School class for 35 years.

Marie was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an International Teachers Honorary, Kill Kare Klub of Hope, Indiana State Teachers Association, and Bartholomew County Retired Teachers.

Over the years, she volunteered for cancer and heart drives and the Senior Center in Columbus. Marie’s favorite hobbies were writing, reading, gardening, and riding her John Deere tractor mower. She especially enjoyed having family members living close and meeting them at church every Sunday.

Survivors include her children, Nena (Bob) Walls of Greensburg, and Evan (Janet) Clouse of Hope; grandchildren, Jodi (Justin) Clouse Zollman, Jackie (Eric) Clouse Jarrett, Jennifer (Will) Clouse Swope, Jesse (Jeremy) Walls Haley, and Abby Walls; great-granddaughters, Annastin Faye Haley and Rhyse Loren Haley; and a great-grandson “her little boy” Brody Evan Zollman; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an infant brother; and her brothers, Floyd Dillon Engle and Luther Evan Engle.

Funeral services will be conducted on Friday at 11 a.m. at Hope Moravian Church with Pastor Andy Kilps officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the church. Burial will follow at Hope Moravian Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be given to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana and Hope Moravian Church General Fund.
