Garry L. Estes, 73, of Flat Rock

Garry L. Estes, 73, of Flat Rock died suddenly Monday April 20, 2020 at his home.

Born Aug. 31, 1946 in Stanford, KY, he was the son of Cyrus M. and Lemma Maedell Jones Estes.

He graduated from Hauser High School in 1964. He married Mary Lou Wilson Aug. 31, 1968 at the Hope United Methodist Church and she survives.

Garry was owner and operator of Estes Material Sales, Inc.

He was in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was also a member of the Hope Masonic Lodge 150.

Garry loved being a business owner in his small hometown where he was able to serve many customers from near and far and especially loved the social aspect of it. He was also known as a jokester, telling many jokes and playing pranks on people. Garry had the kindest heart and a loving soul and helped many people throughout his lifetime.

He had many hobbies such as farming, rocks, antique toys, History, knives and spent many years having mules as pets and selling them.

Survivors include his wife Mary Lou of Flat Rock; his mother, Lemma Maedell of Shelbyville; siblings, Neil B. (Debby) Estes of Columbus, Patty S. (Mike) Shaw of Shelbyville and Sherry G. ( Raymond “Gene”) Thorne of Shelbyville; several nieces and one nephew and several great nieces and nephews. Garry is also survived by his beloved 30 year old mule “Teddy” and his work family of over 20 years, Rex(Pam) Baxter of Flat Rock, Rikki (Cody) Hege of Hope, Brent (Kelly) McKinney of Hope, Andy (Noreen) Niles of St. Paul, Kenneth Lynch of Flat Rock, Candy Young of Flat Rock and his many other cherished employees.

Garry was preceded in death by his grandparents, his father and one niece.

In keeping with Garry’s wishes, cremation is planned and a celebration of his life will be at a later date.

His arrangements were entrusted to Norman Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be donated to and checks made out to Estes Materials, Garry Estes Memorial with Scholarship Fund on the memo line. The fund is held at Jackson County Bank. Because of Garry’s love for kids, this scholarship will be given to a Hauser High School Senior for the 2020- 2021 school year. Garry’s family and employees would like to thank all of his loyal customers over the last 40 years and be assured that Estes Material Sales, Inc. will “Rock On” and he will always be remembered.
