Teen dies in accident near Hartsville

The Bartholomew County Coroner’s Office is investigating the death of a local teen from a motor vehicle crash on State Road 46 between Newbern and Hartsville Tuesday morning.
Coroner Clayton Nolting pronounced 18-year-old Ethan Matthew Nielsen dead at the scene.
The crash was reported at 1:37 a.m. Bartholomew County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the 17000-block of East State Road 46 for a single-vehicle traffic accident. One vehicle was found inverted onto its top in the yard of a residence. Two subjects were located away from the vehicle and are believed to have been ejected from the vehicle during the crash.
On arrival, a homeowner in the area was performing CPR on one of the subjects. Further life saving attempts were made by first responders, but Nielsen was pronounced deceased at the scene. Nolting said the cause of death is blunt force trauma to the head and neck.
Toxicology testing is performed in all fatal crashes, and results should be known in a couple of weeks, according to the coroner.
The other subject was flown by Stat Flight medical helicopter to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis with serious injuries.
The crash is being investigated by Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office.
Also assisting at the scene were: Hope Police Department, Indiana State Police, Hartsville Volunteer Fire Department.
