It doesn't get more American than apple pie. The results are in for the Kappa Kappa Sigma sponsored apple pie baking contest at Friday night's Old Fashioned Fourth. There were nine pies entered. There were three winners in the adult and children's categories. First place got $25 dollars, second place $15 dollars and third place $10 dollars. There were several non-traditional entries this year, including a pie caken, an upside down apple pie and a pie with a chocolate crust.
In the adult category the first place winner was Teresa Covert. She was thrilled with her win, stating she almost forgot to bake it and had to use the car's air conditioner to cool the pie down on the way to the contest. Teresa shared the likes to use three kinds of apples in her pie, a sweet, a musher and a sour apple. Second place was Tina Adams; her secret was praying before and during. Gail Wilson won third place with her late mother's recipe.
In the children's category, Addison Dailey was the returning champion. She had a daring entry with a pie caken. It was an apple pie baked inside a spice cake. Four year old Jessie Smith was the second place winner. Her secret was baking with her Mimi who stated, "No pie crust was ever rolled, rerolled and poked any more than this one. She ate so much of the sliced apples coated in sugar I feared the top pie crust would be concave." They used secrets from several family members to complete their pie. Third place in the children's category was won by Kiah Wright who recommends baking with someone you love.
Non placing pies were entered by Donna Miller, Angie Behrman and Lilly Galloway.
All pies were sold by the Kappa Kappa Sigma booth after judging was complete.
Judges included Evelyn Blackburn, Justin Killmer, Cheyenne and Dylan Smith, and Kile Brown.
