Donald E. Settle, 91, Hope

Donald E Settle passed away at home at 11:15 am, on April 29, 2022. He was 91 years old. Born on March 16, 1931, to Clifford and Loretta Murray Settle, the second of 4 brothers. His brothers James, who survives, William and Charles, who preceded him in death.

After graduating from Columbus High school in 1949, Don began his career at the former Reeves Pulley Company on 7th street. Except for a 3-year stint in the Marine Corp, in the early 1950’s, Don worked at Reeves and subsequently Reliance Electric/Rockwell for 43 years.

Don married Eleanor Titus of Hope on January 29, 1958, and she survives. They had 4 children, Edward, Sandra Mobley, Douglas, and Michael (Sandy) of Westfield. They have 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Granddaughter Emily Settle preceded him in death.

Don loved all sports. At one time, he held the school record in the mile run at Columbus High school. He also represented the school at the State Cross Country Championship. After high school, Don and his brothers were avid hydroplane boat racers, winning several races and national championships. He turned that love of sports to coaching for 20 years in the County Baseball League. Don was an avid Cincinnati Reds fan.

He was also very active in his church. He was a member of the Hope Moravian Church for 64 years serving as an Elder, Trustee, Sunday School teacher, and Youth leader. In addition, Don was very active in the mission fields of Honduras, Nicaragua, St. Kitts, Corn Island, and several sites in the United States. He loved any activity that allowed him to serve others. Don had several hobbies including golf, working on his farm and tending to his livestock.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday May 10 at 2 p.m. at Hope Moravian Church with Pastor Andy Kilps officiating. Visitation will be Monday, May 9 from 4 to 7 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church. Burial will follow at Hope Moravian Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Bartholomew County Military Honor Guard.

Memorial contributions may be made in Don’s name to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana or to the Hope Moravian Church basement renovation fund.
