Snook Haven, Florida

Off the commercial areas of Florida, there is a secluded gem called Snook Haven. The name was derived from a fish, one with delicious white flesh that can grow as large as 40+ pounds. Years ago, I recall traveling from Nokomis to there with our two young daughters for a scenic boating experience on the Myakka River seeing all types of wildlife, including alligators and crocodiles. The early Tarzan filmmakers even spent some time there.

For this adventure, we took our two grandchildren for family night, two young boys with plenty of energy looking forward to seeing some real alligators, not in one of their books. As we entered, it seemed much like it did many years ago, actually refreshing considering how much other places in Florida have changed since first visiting.

The narrow stretch of road getting there still had its share of holes meaning drivers had to swerve from one side to the other to avoid them. Once there, we walked on dirt pathways as we had on our previous trip to the restaurant. Sidewalks would just be out of character. They served the same tasty food, including an irresistible appetizer of fried chips with cheese spread abundantly throughout a large platter with dining options for inside or outside.

Boat rides were not being offered until after summer. But our grandsons didn't mind because they had all kinds of activity centers spread out among the wooden picnic tables just outside the restaurant. Their favorite was the ball poppers, a simple machine that sent a ball in the air when pulling the trigger. There was a catcher built in it even though they preferred popping and chasing. It kept them entertained for 15 minutes, not an easy accomplishment, the younger one being two and and the older one four.

While watching them and other children and families having a wonderful time, the adult performers turned their sound system over to the children, seemingly having background music for each song selected. Young person after the other got on the stage to sing one of their favorite songs while waiting patiently for their opportunity. Talent varied, but no one really cared which was obvious when looking at the proud faces of the stars and their families.

It was the perfect informal school setting. The togetherness, creativeness, smiles, and laughter will always stay with this former teacher fortunate enough to have shared the same informal and formal moments for thirty-six years at Hope Elementary in Hope, Indiana.

Afterward, I was thinking about the importance of music and art in the curriculum of schools, fortunately not subjects driven by standardized tests. I was also thinking about the children in the world who never get a chance to be a child due to circumstances beyond their control. It is sad reality, but there must always be hope the world will somehow find a way to be a better place for all our children. I'm thankful to live in a community which tries so hard to be of help to families and children. It is quite evident to me and hopefully to those reaching out for support.

If you are visiting Florida and looking for a neat and unique place while there, Snook Haven will be worth your time! There is not even an entry fee. If traveling by road, you might want to try a Cook Out restaurant during one of your breaks in Kentucky, Tennessee, or Georgia. The company's name tells you much about their food which is tasty and reasonably priced. And their shakes are outstanding.
