James Aran Burton, 90, Columbus

James Aran Burton, 90, passed away on July 28, 2023, at Silver Oaks in Columbus, IN. He was born on November 20, 1932, to Archie and Thelma Burton in Shelby County, Indiana. He grew up on a farm with his brothers and sisters.

Jim graduated from Clifford High School, enlisted in the Air Force in 1951 and was stationed in Japan during the Korean War. He married Carolyn J. Smith on October 19, 1952. After his military service, Jim and Carolyn lived in Columbus and Hope and raised three children, Mark, Michele, and David.

He worked for Atterbury Job Corps, Cummins and Dorel, before starting and growing his own small business, CJ Printing, which specialized in offset printing. He enjoyed the art of printing and working with many different customers to meet their printing needs.

Jim also enjoyed square dancing and ballroom dancing with his wife of 70 years. He was a fan of IU basketball and was an avid golfer. He was a regular at Greenbelt, and the Lake Venice Golf Club in Venice, Florida.

Jim loved his wife and family unconditionally, and especially enjoyed spending time with them. He is survived by his wife Carolyn, son Mark (Elaine) Burton, daughter-in-law Alma Jean Burton, son-in-law Dennis Emily, grandchildren Evan (Beth) Burton, Alicia (Emerson) Long, Aran (April) Nading, Melanie Nading, and three great-grandchildren, Sophia Doepp, Madeline Long, and Bryson Long. Also surviving are brother Donald (Jeannie) Burton, sister Diana (Bill) Bennett, a niece and nephews.

In addition to his parents, daughter Michele Emily, son David Burton, sister Patsy Settle, brother Kenneth Burton, and nephew Bruce Burton preceded Jim in death.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana. Arrangements were entrusted to Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home.
