With the everyday demands of life and its associated stressors, it is essential to take the time to nurture our emotional health. Why? Because focusing on our mental health allows us to improve our physical health, our relationships with others, and our overall sense of purpose.
Measuring the Impact
According to the World Health Organization, one in four people in the world will be affected by mental or neurological disorders at some point in their lives. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), reports in Indiana, 18.9 percent of adults experienced a mental illness, and 10.3 percent had a substance use disorder. Furthermore, a survey conducted by the Bartholomew County Mental Health Task Force found that 23 percent of adults in Bartholomew County, reported experiencing mental health issues, and 11 percent reported experiencing substance use issues. These aren’t just statistics, they are our neighbors, friends, and family members we care about. What should we do?
Reducing Stigma
It is important for individuals and our community to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and its challenges.
Caring about others in our community is critical for both individual and collective well-being. By working together to support and uplift one another, we can create a stronger, more compassionate, and more resilient community. Thus, giving hope to someone dealing with mental health challenges which can be a powerful way to make a positive impact on their life. It can help them find the strength and motivation to overcome challenges and can provide them with a renewed sense of purpose and meaning.
Hope serves as an influential psychological resource that bolters emotional well-being by instilling optimism, resilience, and adaptive coping strategies. How can I shift my emotional state or help others? Try out some of the following tips to help you feel your best:
Tip 1 - Maintain physical health: Good physical health can have a positive impact on your mental health. Aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity per day such as walking around the Town Square. Make sure to eat a balanced diet, and get enough sleep.
Tip 2 - Socialize: Social connection is key to achieve emotional well-being. Build your social circle and make time for loved ones and friends. Join a community group or club, or volunteer for a cause you care about. Socializing can help build connections with others and reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation.
Tip 3 - Be mindful: Mindfulness involves being present in the moment and accepting your thoughts and feelings without judgment. This can be achieved through meditation, breathing exercises, or focusing on your spiritual and religious needs.
Tip 4 - Manage stress: While stress is a natural part of life, it can quickly take a toll on our mental health if left unchecked. The first step in managing stress is to identify the source of your stress. Find healthy ways to cope with stress, such as practicing relaxation techniques, engaging in a hobby, or talking to a trusted friend or professional.
Tip 5 - Seek help if needed: Mental health professionals can provide support and guidance for a range of mental health concerns. Don’t hesitate to reach out to a therapist, counselor, or psychiatrist if you’re struggling with your mental health.
By taking care of our emotional well-being, we can improve our overall health and live happier, more fulfilling lives. Let’s make this a time to prioritize our mental health and support those around us who may be struggling by showing that we care and give them “Hope”. Remember one in four people need it.
