Charles Harold Avey, 73, passed away Sunday, October 29, 2023.
Born on February 14, 1950, he was the son of Isaac C. and Elizabeth (Turner) Avey who predeceased him.
Charles attended Waldron High School for 12 years, graduating in 1968. He graduated from Ball State University with an industrial arts degree in 1972. He then entered the Army for three years and was stationed at Fort McPherson, Georgia where he was trained as a dental specialist. Later, Charlie owned and operated Avey Dental Lab where he made various teeth replacement necessities. Charles was quite talented as a craftsmen and carpenter. He worked at a furniture factory in Waldron and also had been employed by the IU School of Dentistry of Indianapolis.
He always had many dogs and cats and was a nature lover also, forbidding hunting or trapping on his property. Charlie was a big fan of music from the sixties and seventies. He was a dedicated follower of country rock singer Commander Cody. His friends and family will remember him as a fun-loving, colorful person. He enjoyed relaxing and visiting with those who would stop by his home in Waldron. Charlie was well liked by staff at Arbor Grove Village Nursing Facility, where he has lived since January of 2012, and he certainly appreciated their concern and care.
Charlie's relatives are an uncle, Richard Turner of Odessa, Texas, an aunt, Jerri Callahan-Turner of Shelbyville, IN and cousins John and Les Durbin, Indianapolis, IN; Jim Durbin, Nevada, MO; Alice Meyer and Deanna Thurston, Shelbyville, IN; Doug Turner, Milan, IN; Dan Turner, Waldron, IN; Karen Hopkins, Midland Texas; Mike Turner, Odessa, TX and Richard J. Turner, Brownwood,TX.
He was preceded in death by his parents, aunt & uncle Gus & Charlotte Turner, aunt & uncle Fred and Virginia Durbin, aunt Marlene Turner, and cousin Nancy Esters.
Funeral services will be 12 p.m., Saturday, November 4, 2023, at Glenn E. George & Son Funeral Home, 437 Amos Road. Friends may call on Saturday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be in Van Pelt Cemetery.
The family would like to gratefully recognize the staff at Margaret Mary Hospice, Batesville, IN as well as the entire staff at Arbor Grove Village, Greensburg, IN for the devoted, loving care that they gave to Charlie. Their kindness and dedication will always be remembered by Charlie's family.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Charlie's name to the Shelby County Humane Society.
