The holiday season has officially arrived, and a Hope town Square filled with the sights and sounds of the holidays will welcome visitors as they gather for the first Christmas of Today Celebration from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, December 15 in downtown Hope.
Presented by Main Street of Hope in collaboration with the Columbus Visitors Center, the event will feature a variety of activities, including games, crafts, a scavenger hunt and more, throughout the evening, says Jaime Stainbrook, committee chair of Main Street of Hope.
Holiday joy will welcome visitors to the decked-out Square where there will be a tree lighting at 6 p.m. set to a backdrop of festive songs offered by the Hauser choir, says Stainbrook. Storefronts will also feature a variety of holiday-themed scenes designed and created by Hauser art students, Stainbrook says, as well as holiday villages.
Rumor has it there will also be an appearance by the Grinch and other seasonal characters with a keen eye to spot them.
“I wanted to do something for the community to get a lot of the public involved and into the holiday spirit,” Stainbrook says. “We have a lot going on during this time of year, but I wanted to add a few new things.”
Inspired by her love for the community that she’s called home for more than four decades and an affection for Hallmark movies, Stainbrook says she’s excited for the celebration to unfold.
Free horse-drawn carriage and sleigh rides will ferry visitors around town to see featured decorated residences as part of the evening’s holiday celebration. A driving map will be available for those opt for a self-driving tour, Stainbrook adds.
Treasure seekers can enjoy a holiday-inspired scavenger hunt and discover unfound treasure at the shelter house where there will also be several activities going on, including writing a letter to Santa (Main Street will mail it!) and making food for Santa's hungry reindeer.
Visitors can add some festive sparkle to their hair as there will be hair tinsel offered for $2 per strand or six for $10, Stainbrook says.
The Hauser high school girls’ softball team will be selling hot cocoa and fresh donut holes throughout the event. Additionally, as the Hauser choir and band perform on the bandstand, there will also be popcorn and drinks available.
Individuals who would like to take part in the town’s light contest can contact Main Street of Hope via Facebook HERE to express their interest and be included in the light contest or added to the festive home’s tour, Stainbrook says.
Stainbrook encourages those who have clear, gallon milk jugs to spare to please bring them to a Main Street committee member or drop it off at Reflections Hair on the Square, located at 623 Harrison St. downtown. And, as always, those who wish to volunteer for the event are asked to contact Jaime Stainbrook via email at [email protected] or call 812-350-4363.
