Janie Nasby, 87, Columbus

Janie Nasby, 87, of Columbus, passed peacefully at home on Friday, September 1, 2023, surrounded by family.

Born on June 9, 1936 in Columbus, Janie was the daughter of Arthur and Goldie Marie Whittington Dobbs. She grew up mostly in Columbus and also lived in Westport, graduating from Sandcreek High School.  She married Maxwell Nasby on September 2, 1955, and he preceded her in death on March 5, 2007. Member of the Ogala Saddle Club, Janie loved to ride horses and camp with her family. She was active in pursuits with Mary Kay and Watkins products. She and her husband spent many weekends at various flea markets, buying and selling treasures. She also enjoyed oil painting familiar scenes from her country life. Affectionately known as “Mama Janie” to many, even outside of the family. She spent her life caring for those around her and was always saying a prayer for those she loved. Janie loved to travel and enjoyed trips all over the country including Montana, New York City, Nova Scotia and especially loved to visit warm sandy beaches. Janie was devoted in her faith and in her 80s, she volunteered at the Bartholomew County Jail for the Residents Encounter Christ program as well as attended the Emmaus Walk. Janie was a member of Mt. Healthy Community Church and had previously attended Columbus Bible Church (Berean).

Survivors include children Lea (David, d.) Goins of Columbus, Lisa (Kevin) Gore of Nashville, Jeff Nasby of Columbus, and Greg (Nancy) Nasby of Columbus; grandchildren, Kyra Goins, Nellie Stout, Katy Merchant, Sarah Nasby, Alex Nasby, Seth Nasby, Lane Nasby, Clayton Spinks, Hannah Spinks; great-grandchildren, John David Myers, Kolsen Myers, Nash Myers, Willem Stout, Norie Stout, Sam Merchant, Duke Merchant, Kennah Nasby, Theo Nasby, Sophia Beeker, Journey Nasby, Briar Nasby, and Landyn Michael; and great-great-grandchild, Kai Myers; brother, Steve (Rose) Dobbs; sister-in-law, Theda Dobbs; and a large extended family, including several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews.

Janie is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Maxwell Nasby; brothers, Charles Marshall and Marion Dobbs; sisters, Maxine Thomas and Josephine Coleman; step-mother, Marie Dobbs, and grand daughter Candace Michael.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, September 4, 2023, at Mt. Healthy Community Church at 11950 S. SR 58 Columbus, IN 47201. Visitation will be held from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday at the church. A private family burial will be at New Zion Methodist Cemetery.
