Eleanor J. (Titus) Settle passed away at home at 8:45 p.m., on September 8, 2023. She was 84 years old. Born on January 28, 1939, to Oren E. Titus and Reba Reed Titus, she was the oldest of four children. She is survived by her sister Joyce Titus Meier and brother Daniel Titus. Her brother, Ken, preceded her in death.
After graduating from Hope High School in 1957, she married Donald E. Settle on January 29, 1958. He preceded her in death. They had four children, Edward, Sandra Mobley, Douglas, and Michael (Sandy) of Westfield. They have nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Granddaughter Emily Settle preceded her in death.
She was very involved with children’s sports activities. Her roles included scorekeeper, concession stand and snack Mom. She rarely missed a baseball game, track meet, swim meet or cross country meet for her children and grandchildren. She loved most sports, but baseball was a favorite. She was a big fan of the Cincinnati Reds and attended several Spring Training games in Florida and Arizona with her husband.
Eleanor was a lifelong member of the Hope Moravian Church. In fact, she assumed the unofficial role of church historian from her maternal grandmother, Edith Schaefer Reed. She served the church in many ways. Most notably as church secretary for 30 years. As a member of Women’s Society, she served as coordinator of the churches’ Annual Turkey Supper. Many of her notes and instructions are still used to this day.
But the impact that she had on the youth of the Mid-States Region of the Moravian Church will be her living legacy. Starting out as registrar, she spent over 30 years serving the youth at Tar Hollow Church Camp at Tar Hollow State Park in Ohio. Jr/Sr high school youth from the Moravian churches in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois for the one-week camp. Not only serving as registrar, but “Dean of the Hills” and later Camp Director. Many of her closest friends were met because of her association with Tar Hollow Church Camp.
The funeral service will be held on Friday, September 15, 2023, at 11 a.m. at Hope Moravian Church with Pastor Andy Kilps officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, September 14, 2023, from 4 to 7 p.m. and one hour prior to the funeral service on Friday. Burial will follow at Hope Moravian Cemetery.
