Dan Wallace Moore, Jr., 77, Newberry, Michigan

Dan Wallace Moore, Jr., of Newberry, Michigan, died Thursday, March 28, 2024, at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital in Newberry.

Born July 2, 1946, in Columbus, Indiana, son of the late Dan and Mary Jo (Grider) Moore, Sr. Dan was a 1964 graduate of Hauser High School in Hope, Indiana.

Following high school, Dan enlisted in the US Marine Corp. serving during the Vietnam War, was a two-time recipient of the Purple Heart of Valor and was honorably discharged in 1968 attaining the rank of Corporal. Dan continued in the Marine Corp. Reserve until April of 1970. Dan also served 18 years in the National Guard until his honorable discharge in 2001.

Dan was a graduate of Purdue University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Forestry. He was employed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Forest Division and Eastern Upper Peninsula Trails Specialist with the Parks and Recreation Division, retiring in 2015.

Dan was a member of the Bethel Community Church, life member of the American Legion Post #74 serving in the honor guard and adjutant, life member of the VFW, life member of the DAV and life member of the NRA.

Dan enjoyed fishing, hunting, reading, gardening and word puzzles. In 2022, Dan participated in the UP Michigan Honor Flight to Washington D.C.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Robert Moore and his nephew Derek Thayer.

Survivors include his wife, Lorna Kortman Moore whom he married February 24, 1989. Children: Roy Moore of Richland, Washington, J. C. (Becka) Alcorn and Michelle Moore all of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, Dan (Amanda) Moore III of Menominee Falls, Wisconsin and Amy (Dave) Spencer of Kinross, Michigan. Siblings: Joe (Cheryl) Moore of California, Lynn Thayer and Margaret Moore of Hope, Indiana and Tom Moore of Paoli, Indiana, Eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Cremation was planned and later a Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, April 20, 2024, at 11 a.m. at the American Legion Post #74 in Newberry with Diann Bowler officiating. Following the ceremony at the Legion Post, military honors by the American Legion Post #74 and the United States Marine Corp will be held. Interment will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Michigan at a later date.
