He graduated from Brown County High School in 1965 and went on to study Recreation & Outdoor Education at Indiana State University, later earning a master’s degree in Education from Indiana University. Steve dedicated 38 years to teaching at Flat Rock Elementary and Southwestern Elementary of Southwestern Consolidated Schools in Shelby County.
A man of great faith, Steve was an active member of New Hope Christian Church. He was known for his big personality, sense of humor, and selflessness. Upon his retirement in 2007, Steve enjoyed golfing, traveling, and spending time in his yard. He cherished time with his family and lifelong friends and had a particular love for cruising the world with friends. Steve was committed to instilling strong values in his grandchildren, niece, and nephews and was always ready to help those in need.
Steve is survived by his beloved wife and high school sweetheart, Rebecca “Becky” (Taylor) Swift; his daughters, Heather (Brett) Williams of Fishers, Indiana, and Abby Swift of Indianapolis, Indiana; and his grandchildren, Luke Williams, Taylor Williams, and Rohan Crockett. He is also survived by his sister, Pam Swift of Nashville, Indiana, and his brother, John (Kristen) Swift of Carmel, Indiana. Steve was preceded in death by his parents, James E. Swift and Amanda Louise Swift.
Steve's family was his pride and joy, and he was a devoted husband and "Papaw" to his grandchildren. His legacy lives on through the values he imparted, the faith he demonstrated, and the memories he created.
