Game Report for Week 12/02: Basketball

Boys’ Basketball
v. Morristown – The Boys Varsity Basketball team celebrated Homecoming with a big victory over Mid Hoosier Conference rival Morristown, defeating the Yellow Jackets by a score of 77-40. The Jets jumped out to an early 11-0 lead, and carried a 13-point advantage into the halftime break. The game broke open on a 16-2 run by the Jets to start the 3rd quarter, and they never looked back from there, out-scoring Morristown by 24 in the second half.

It was a balanced offensive attack for the Jets, as they had 5 players posting 9+ points, had 11 made 3-point field goals, and 26 team assists while shooting 60% from the field. They also held Morristown to a 33% field goal percentage & out rebounded them 31 to 20.

Gelfius: 14 points & 8 rebounds
Keller: 12 points 10 assists 6 steals
Buck: 9 points & 6 rebounds

Blair: 6 points & 3 rebounds

Rounding out the scoring were Jentzen Bechtel with 3 and Joel Bechtel with 2. The JV Jets also got a nice Homecoming win defeating Morristown by a score of 49-17.

v. Trinity Lutheran - The Jets hit the road for the first time this season on Saturday, traveling to take on sectional 60 opponent Trinity Lutheran in Seymour. The Jets came away with a commanding victory by a score of 76-29 to move their season record to 3-0.

It was much the same on Saturday as the Jets jumped out of the gate to take an early 10-0 lead.

Solid half-court defense, efficient transition offense, and consistent perimeter shooting sparked the Jets all night. They led 24-7 after the first quarter and continued the dominant performance leading 46-15 heading into the half. The Jets rolled on to victory, closing out the game by out- scoring Trinity 30-14 in the second half.

The Jets were flying high all evening in a game that featured 5 slam dunks, 4 coming from Collin Buck and the 5th from Taeshaun Tungate. An impressive defensive effort saw the Jets hold Trinity to a 21% shooting night from the field, while the Jets shot 59% from the field and 58% from behind the arc with 11 made 3’s. The Jets out rebounded the Cougars 35 to 15.

Jentzen Bechtel and Tyler Deiwert each added 3 to round out the scoring. Bill Miller and Joel Bechtel each tallied 4 rebounds as well for the Varsity Jets.

The JV Jets (3-0) secured a road victory at Trinity Lutheran as well, defeating the host school by a score of 56-43.

Boys’ C-Team Basketball
v. Southwestern
– The Boys’ C-Team opened up its season with a big win Monday night vs. Southwestern 59-25. Hauser spread their scoring between 8 players: Curtis Kilps 17, Camden Grimes 9, Aiden Bense and Peter Taylor both with 7, Tishawn Lisby 6, Koleson Gernentz 5, and Isaac Fuller 4. The Team is 1-0 and will travel to Oldenburg on Wednesday.

@ Oldenburg – The Boys’ C-Team took to the road on Wednesday evening and jump out to an early lead and never looked back winning 43-11 at Oldenburg. Scoring was spread among the team with Curtis Kilps scoring 9, Phillipe Eugene 6, Aiden Bense 6, Camden Grimes 5, Peter Taylor, Adynn Dempsey and Jaycen Tuner all contributed 3, and Isaac Fuller scoring 2 points. The Jets are now 2-0 and will travel to Indy Lutheran on Saturday.

Girls’ Basketball
JV v. Jennings County
- The Girls’ JV Basketball Team welcomed Jennings County to the Hangar on Monday night for the night cap of a doubleheader. The Jets were defeated 38-36 in a back-and-forth game. The Panthers evened the two-game series at one with the victory. The JV team will host the Homeschool Hawks on Tuesday with basketball starting at 6 p.m.

JV v. Homeschool Hawks/Varsity v. Southwestern – The Girls’ Basketball Teams welcomed the Homeschool Hawks and MHC foe Southwestern to the Hangar on Tuesday night. The varsity used a 20-0 run from the middle of the first quarter to the end of the second quarter to build a 37-14 half time lead The Jets again outscored the Spartans 18-5 in the third quarter. The Jets finished the game off and won 62-24. Hauser was led by Norah Berkenstock’s double-double of 22 points and 10 assists. June Berkenstock pulled down 6 rebounds and scored 10 points. Braelyn Williams scored 9 points, Kennedy Konradi scored 8 points and went a perfect 4 for 4 from the field. Abby Manley scored 5 points shooting 3 of 4 from the free throw line and Chloie Phelps scored 4 points. Haven Hartwell and Willa Wetzel each had 2 points, and Hartwell was awarded the “Game Changer” award. The varsity is now 4-3 on the year and 1-1 in MHC play. The JV was defeated by the Homeschool Hawks and moved to 5-3 on the year. Both Teams will host Indy Lutheran on Thursday with basketball starting at 6 p.m.

v. Indy Lutheran – The Jets welcomed Indy Lutheran to the Jet Hangar for Cancer Awareness Night on Thursday evening. The program honored David Bain Sr. and family between games as he lost his battle with cancer recently. The Jets raced out to a 14-5 first quarter lead and never looked back winner 45-26. June Berkenstock scored 14 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Norah Berkenstock scored 11 points and had 6 steals. Braelyn Williams scored 4 points and Kennedy Konradi, Chloie Phelps, Willa Wetzel, and Abby Manley all scored 3 points. Haven Hartwell and Leah Manley scored 2 points each for the Jets. Willa Wetzel was awarded the “Game Changer” award. The varsity moved its record to 5-3 and will travel to Crothersville on Saturday. The JV defeated Indy Lutheran and moved its record to 6-4. Peyton Norris was awarded the “Game Changer” award.

Varsity @ Crothersville – The Jets hit the road on Saturday traveling to Crothersville to finish out a busy week. The Jets again started fast leading 20-8 after the first quarter and winning 53-30. Again, most of the damage was done by June Berkenstock as she scored 8 of her team high 16 in the first quarter. The Jets struggled from the free throw line shooting 0-10 in the first half or the lead could have grown. Norah Berkenstock and Kennedy Konradi both scored 9 points. Braelyn Williams scored 7 points and Haven Hartwell and Chloie Phelps both had 4 points. Abby Manley again passed the basketball very well and scored 2 points with Nevaeh Paetzel scoring 2 points late to round out the scoring. The Jets are now 6-3 and will travel to Shawe Memorial on Tuesday with basketball starting at 6 p.m.

7th / 8th Grade Boys Basketball
@ Southwestern
– The 7th and 8th Grade Boys’ Basketball Teams traveled to Southwestern on Monday night and both teams defeated the Spartans. The 7th Grade won by a score of 43-21 with Blankinship leading the way with 13 points. Leonard chipped in 9 points, Brown, Grimes, and Russell all scored 4 points for the Jets. Noble tossed in a 3 at the end of the 3rd quarter to beat the buzzer.

Henderson and Maughon both scored 2 points and Hage and Hamilton scored a point to round out the scoring. The Jets are now 9-1. The 8th Grade Team won big and extended its winning streak to seven games. Stuckey led the way with 14 points, and Noble scored 11 points. Wright had a big first quarter scoring all 9 of his points in the first quarter. Wiwi added 7 points, with Raisor scoring 6 points. Linke added 3, Richards 2, and Carman 1 to round out the scoring. The 8th is now 7-2 and both teams will host North Decatur on Thursday in the field house with basketball starting at 6 p.m.

v. North Decatur – The Jr. High Boys Basketball Teams hosted North Decatur on Thursday evening. The 7th was defeated 42-36 and moved to 9-2 on the year. Leonard scored 15 points and Brown added 11 points. Blankinship scored 7 and Russell had 2, with Henderson adding 1 point.  The 8th Grade defeated North Decatur 39-13 to win its eighth in a row. The 8th grade is now 8-2 on the year. Wright led the way with 16 points scoring 8 of those in the second quarter. Raisor scored 6, Wiwi had 5, and Stuckey added 4 points. Noble, Carman, Seal, and Richards all scored 2 points for the Jets. Both teams will host Brown County on Monday with basketball starting at 6 p.m.
