Rev. John Edward Wright, 78, Vernon

Rev. John Edward Wright, 78, of Vernon, passed away at 8:07 a.m. on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at his residence.

Born November 16, 1945, in Columbus, the son of the late Wallace Wright and Phosia Ropp Wright Crandall. He married Linda Kay Burton on January 20, 1963, in Hope; she preceded him in death on July 20, 2022.

John was 1963 graduate of Hauser High School in Hope. He preached for area churches. John worked as a painter for Cummins Engine Company in Columbus for 36 years retiring in 2006; after retirement from Cummins, he worked for Vernon Liquors, State Street Liquors, Eric K Motors and was a substitute teacher for Jennings County School Corporation. He was a member of Tea Creek Baptist Church and enjoyed singing in the choir, racing cars and spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Survivors include his sons, Todd Wright and Tim (Sara) Wright, both of North Vernon and Tom Wright of Vernon; his daughter, Tami (Marty) Evans of North Vernon; brother-in-law, Greg (Marcia) Burton of Columbus; grandchildren, Hannah (Jeff) Henson, and Katie (Cai) Fields, both of Columbus. T.J. (Kim) Wright and Jaymie Wright, both Vernon, Sarah (Robert) Miller, Chris (Kyriana) Wright, Danielle Malcomb, T.J. (Alexandra) Perkins, Jesse Evans, Bobby (Jeanetta) Gresham and David (Crystal) Gresham, all of North Vernon, Donovan (Audriana) Malcomb of Holton, Brittany Beam of Shelbyville, and Bethany Lamb of Blountville, Tennessee; and thirty-four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; daughter-in-law, Debbie Wright; grandson, Ryan Malcomb; brother, David Wright; and sister, Joann Asher.

A funeral service for John was conducted at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North Vernon with the Rev. Kim Wright officiating. The visitation for family and friends was from 11 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday.

Memorials may be made in honor of John through the funeral home for expenses.
