Mary June Hern passed from this life on August 18, 2025 at Seven Hills Health and Rehabilitation in Tallahassee, Florida. She was 99 years old.
Mary June was born on June 6, 1926 to WIllard and Verda (Surber) Adam, in Ripley County, Indiana. Their home eventually became part of the Jefferson Proving Ground. The family, which included two more daughters, moved close to Bear Creek Baptist Church, which became their church home.
Mary June married Robert W. Hern on June 6, 1948, and they moved to Hope, Indiana. Mary June had fond memories of Hope where she cared for her two daughters and helped her husband in his watch repair shop. They attended the First Baptist Church. The family moved to Fort Myers, Florida in 1961. After Mary June’s husband died in 1978, she worked for several years at a data processing center for a local bank. She later moved to a senior living community in Ocala, Florida, then ultimately, to Tallahasee, Florida to be close to her daughter Jane and her family. While living in Ocala, she made several extended trips to Indiana to visit other family members.
Mary June enjoyed sewing, working with her flowers, and helping others. She was a very loving person with a good sense of humor and epitomized her faith through her daily life.
She was preceded in death by: her husband, Robert William Hern, parents, Willard and Verda (Surber) Adam, and sisters Norma Lou (Robert) Irwin, and Wanda Lee (Bobby) Greathouse.
Mary June is survived by her daughters, Jane Ellen (John) Naf, Tallahassee, Florida and Deborah Anne (David) Sharp, Columbus, Indiana. Grandchildren Sarah (Jordon) Biehl and John R. Naf, Tallahassee, and Alope’ Villarreal, Columbus, Indiana. Niece Rhonda (John) Martin, Greenwood, Indiana. Other extended family members.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 23 at Bear Creek Baptist Cemetery, located at 3945 W County Rd. 1000 N, in Westport.
