It is with great reverence we honor the life of Mr. Fredrick A. Johns, affectionately known as Fred to his friends and loved ones, who passed from this life in his birthplace of Columbus, Indiana on January 15, 2025, at the age of 82. Born on September 10, 1942, Fred's youthful days were memorably spent at Zaharako's in the late 1950s, a time and place that remained dear to him throughout his life.
For an impressive 33 years, Fred made significant contributions to the Cummins Engine Company, where he dedicated his career, fostering not only engines but also lasting friendships and an enduring legacy of excellence. Beyond his professional life, Fred carried a passion for the simple joys—his fondness for puzzle books, the excitement he felt cheering on the Colts, and the comfort he found in his favorite shows, "The Price is Right" and "The Young and the Restless".
Fred is survived by his wife, Brenda (Schowengerdt) Johns who he married on March 26, 2008, children, Steve (Carly) Johns of North Vernon, Patty (Daniel) Bragg of Hope, and Hope (Bill) Beltz of Cape Coral, Florida, and further blessed by the delight of five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and a sister, Peggy (Frank) Smith of Brown County. Fred was preceded in death by his parents, brother Frank "Bucky" Johns, and sister Mary Grider, Fred's memory will be held in the hearts of his family, a beacon of the warm and gentle spirit he was known for.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, January 24, at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street, with the Pastor Jonathan Lucas officiating.
Family and friends may gather for a time of visitation before the service from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, January 24. Fred will be laid to rest at Garland Brook Cemetery.
